You’re Never Too Old to Play: Play Therapy with Adults

We all know that play therapy is incredibly helpful for children, but adults can benefit from play too! This fun, interactive workshop will address the benefits of play therapy with adults, including the application of the therapeutic powers of play identified by Dr. Charles Schaefer. The workshop will also address specific play therapy interventions that can be utilized with grown-ups, and illustrate play therapy with adults through video and experiential activities.
Workshop Objectives: After the session, participants will be able to….
- Identify four specific benefits of using play therapy with adults.
- Discuss at least two of the therapeutic powers of play identified by Charles Schaefer as they relate to play therapy
activities that can be used with adults.
- Demonstrate at least two play therapy activities that can be used with adults.
- Discuss at least two common obstacles to using play therapy with adults and identify ways to overcome those obstacles.
Presenter: Dr. Lisa Shadburn is a licensed psychologist and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor who has been conducting training in play therapy and child interventions for over two decades. She is an instructor at the UC San Diego extension play therapy training program and is currently the president of the California Association for Play Therapy. She has been a program director and play therapy practitioner in community mental health, school-based mental health, and private practice, and is a former adjunct faculty member at Alliant International University/CSPP, Los Angeles and Phillips Graduate Institute.
This workshop meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education as required by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The California Association for Play Therapy (CALAPT) is approved by APT to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (provider # 00-094). CALAPT maintains responsibility for the program.
