Workshop Description: Participants will learn to how to assess for suicide risk, providing integrated attachment-based play therapy treatment and suicide prevention tools. Participants will explore play-therapy interventions for assessment, treatment and prevention tools crucial in assisting youth with the treatment and prevention of suicidality.

 

About your Presenters:

Leslie Baker, MFT, NCC, RPT-S is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience in mental health. She is the owner/director of Therapy2Thrive® Marriage and Family Counseling Center, Inc. Leslie is an author/co-author, speaking locally, nationally, and internationally on topics of play therapy.

Mary Ruth Cross is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor.  She has been in the field of mental health for  30 years.   Mary Ruth is the CEO/Owner of Treehouse Family Counseling Services in San Ramon, CA.   Cross Play Therapy Consulting is Mary Ruth’s program that supports clinicians working towards full credentialing as a play therapist through the Association for Play Therapy.   Mary Ruth is co-author of a children’s book called “Snug and Rug and the No Good Very Bad Thing”:  A story of soothing and calming after a traumatic event.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this workshop. Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 risk factors to identify suicidal behavior in youth and adults in play therapy settings.
  2. Describe 3 warning signs to identify suicidal behavior in youth and adults in play therapy settings.
  3. List 1 or more assessment tools for youth coping with suicidal thoughts/ideation and/or suicidal behaviors that can be integrated into play therapy.
  4. List 2 or more play therapy-based prevention strategies for youth & adults coping with suicidal thoughts/ideation and/or suicidal behaviors.
  5. Examine and apply at least 3 play therapy based strategies for working with youth with suicidal ideation.
  6. Identify at least 5 myths about assessment and treatment of suicidality in youth in play therapy settings.
