TraumaPlay is a flexibly sequential play therapy model for treating traumatized and attachment disturbed children and teens. TraumaPlay integrates non-directive and directive approaches to play therapy, providing an umbrella framework for developmentally sensitive trauma treatment, while prioritizing the needs of the child moment-to-moment in session. The seven key components of treatment providing the scaffolding for dozens of practical, creative, and immediately useful play therapy interventions.


TraumaPlay® is informed by our current understandings of the neurobiology of play and the neurobiology of trauma, and is built on the power of one to heal the other. Grounded in attachment theory, the child or family is met moment-to-moment as therapeutic needs are assessed. The framework of seven therapeutic treatment goals serve as the umbrella under which clinicians have freedom to employ a variety of interventions. This components-based model demistifies play-based trauma treatment by outlining the scope and sequence of trauma specific work with children. Integrating non-directive and directive approaches, this model provides a theoretical scaffold at each point in treatment that supports the selective use of play-based interventions while also demonstrating the traumatized child’s self-directed use of the playroom to heal. Grounded in an integrative paradigm, this model translates evidence informed trauma treatment with children into a sequence of play-based component modules. Each component represents an important dimension of trauma treatment and articulates both a specific treatment goal and accompanying interventions. The model differentiates between goals of trauma treatment that are best accomplished through non-directive methods and goals that are best served by cognitive-behavioral play therapy interventions, expressive therapy techniques and dyadic treatment approaches.


The workshop will include the following topics:

  • Using a child’s safety metaphors to create a safe place for trauma processing
  • Assessing a client’s current coping strategies and augmenting the adaptive ones
  • Soothing the child’s physiology
  • Increasing emotional literacy
  • Delivering gradual exposure in a developmentally sensitive way through play
  • Building a coherent trauma narrative that integrates somatosensory information related to the trauma
  • Addressing the child’s thought life (dealing with cognitive distortions)
  • Making positive meaning of the post-trauma self
Learning Objectives Day 1: After the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) List the seven key components of the play therapy model, TraumaPlay®
2) Name the three roles of the Traumaplay® therapist
3) Define the role of titration in TraumaPlay® in the context of the neurochemical boxing match
4) Explain four play therapy interventions aimed at enhancing safety and security for clients
5) List four play therapy interventions that help clients assess and augment adaptive coping
6) Describe five play therapy interventions aimed at soothing the physiology


Learning Objectives Day 2: After the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Identify two foundational roles that caregivers play as attachment figures.
2) List the six caregiver co-regulation strategies codified in the acronym SOOTHE that can be utilized in play therapy.
3) Define the phrase “continuum of disclosure” over the course of play therapy treatment.
4) List five mediums for trauma narrative work in play therapy.
5) Describe four play therapy interventions aimed at integrating sensory content into narrative work
6) List two play therapy interventions aimed at addressing the thought life


TraumaPlay® offers a best practice framework for trauma work with families while encouraging ongoing assessment and offering flexibility to the clinician to tailor treatment to the needs of individual families. Each of the key components of the model is informed by peer reviewed research and relevant literature.


Paris Goodyear-Brown, LCSW, RPT-S, is the creator of TraumaPlay®, a flexibly sequential play therapy model for treating trauma. She is the founder of the TraumaPlay® Institute, the Clinical Director of Nurture House and an Adjunct Instructor of Psychiatric Mental Health at Vanderbilt University. Paris has an international reputation as a dynamic and compassionate speaker, an innovative clinician, and a prolific author. She has received the APT award for Play Therapy Promotion and Education, gave a Ted Talk on Trauma and Play Therapy, served as the Executive Director of the Lipscomb Play Therapy and Expressive Arts Center, is on the board of TNAPT, and is the author of multiple chapters and articles related to child therapy as well as eleven books,including the hot off the press volume Parents as Partners in Child Therapy: A Clinician’s Guide.


Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for 6 hours of contact continuing education credit per day for Psychologists, MFTs & LCSWs and LPCC’s. The California Association for Play Therapy (CALAPT) is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (APT Approved Provider # 00-094). Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by APT for 12 NON-CONTACT CE Hours. The California Association for Play Therapy is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Psychologists may receive 12 hours of continuing education credit for this workshop. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) now recognizes APA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs, MFTs and LPCCs. The California Association for Play Therapy maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. NO CREDIT FOR PARTIAL ATTENDANCE.
