- List play therapy intervention to use with families of transgender and non-binary youth.
Workshop Description:
This workshop explores play therapy with transgender and non-binary youth and their families. The presenter examines the social construction of gender, analyzes gender belief systems, analyzes the psychological reasons for creating gender categories, explores what gender is, and focuses on
gender terminology. The presenter then dives into the use of pronouns, gender diverse behavior/expression, diagnostic criteria, comorbidity, discrimination, and what affirming language clinicians need to promote in their practices.
Presenter:
Samantha Willis earned a Master’s of Education in Counseling and Guidance with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health from the University of Montevallo. She also earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Social Work with a Minor in Philosophy and Religion from the University of Montevallo. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Alabama and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina. She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor and Registered Play Therapist. Samantha specializes in LGBTQ+ issues, trauma, and dissociative disorders.
This workshop meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education as required by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The California Association for Play Therapy (CALAPT) is approved by APT to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (provider # 00-094). CALAPT maintains responsibility for the program.
