Using the Therapeutic Powers of Play with Teens and Tweens
In this workshop we will be exploring the combination of directive and non-directive play therapy approaches that are effective with teens. The workshop will cover therapeutic models and research relating to play therapy with teens/tweens. It will also address neurobiological and developmental factors that influence play therapy with teens. The training will teach numerous interventions that can be used in a variety of settings: individual, family, group or school settings. Interventions will be taught using experiential and interactive methods. We will address the importance of involving caregivers and methods to include the parents in the therapy.
Play therapy, specifically expressive arts therapy, has long been used with teens to promote psychological health and social support. They offer teens “a way to express their feelings, perceptions, thoughts, and memories in ways that words cannot” (Malchiodi, 2005, p. 9). Play and expressive arts are the natural language for children because they are full of symbols and metaphors which allows them to communicate and work through complex feelings.
Self-Expression, access to the unconscious, catharsis, positive emotions, stress inoculation, stress management, and resilience are critical components to therapy with teens. Throughout the workshop, these specific therapeutic powers of play will be addressed, and interventions focused on enhancing the play therapist’s understanding of and internalization of these important powers and therapeutic benefits, will be demonstrated.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to discuss theoretical models of play therapy that are effective with teens.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to describe neurological and developmental factors that influence play therapy with teens.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to cite 2 specific Play Therapy interventions using expressive arts to use with teens.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to cite 3 interventions using the therapeutic powers of play with teens.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to cite 2 interventions they can use with teens to address self-harm/suicidal ideation.
- At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to explain to caretakers how to utilize play therapy and expressive arts at home to help teens.
Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for 6 hours of non-contact continuing education credit for Psychologists, MFTs & LCSWs and LPCC’s. The California Association for Play Therapy (CALAPT) is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (APT Approved Provider # 00-094). Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by APT for 6 NON-CONTACT CE Hours. The California Association for Play Therapy is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Psychologists may receive 6 hours of continuing education credit for this workshop. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) now recognizes APA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs, MFTs and LPCCs. The California Association for Play Therapy maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. NO CREDIT FOR PARTIAL ATTENDANCE.

There is a $25.00 administrative fee for refunds. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline, however, registration may be transferred to another individual. There are no price breaks for partial attendance.
